The Housing Department, in cooperation with 20 other agencies, convenes monthly as a united Housing Coalition. The Housing Coalition meets to review current housing issues in Lawrence County, determine methods of resolving these issues and seek local support, funding and administrative assistance. The Housing Coalition is currently in contact with 38 local churches to offer referral information for housing issues as well as other social services.
The Housing Coalition is developing a special needs program for young pregnant teens which incorporates housing, life-skills and health assistance.
The Housing Department works with other agencies such as Reach Work Camps and Christian-based youth ministry to provide services within the community. Reach Work Camps picked Lawrence County as one of their mission sites for 2003. As a result, over 300 youth provided minor home repairs that included painting, roofing, and window replacements, at no cost, for 25-30 low-income homeowners. The Housing Department assisted with the coordination of this project.
