
More than 2000 volunteers throughout Lawrence County participated in the 18th annual National & Global Youth Service day from April 21st through April 23rd. This included over 1600 youth (ages 5-25), over 400 adults and over 100 children under the age of five. LCCAP was chosen as one of 50 agencies across the United States to be a lead agency in NYSD. Youth from local schools including; Lincoln High School, Shenango High School, Laurel High School, Neshannock High School, Wilmington High School, Mohawk Elementary and High School, Union Elementary and High School, New Castle High School, and the Lawrence County Career & Technical Center all engaged in youth-driven community service projects. Other groups involved included, Cray Challenges, Cray Residential Group Homes, Head Start, The Learning Tree, Little Treasures Day Care, LCSS CORP Clubs, 4-H, St. Vitus School and Sunday School, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, First United Brethren Church, Washington Union Alliance Church and Castlewood Alliance Church. Each participating group developed projects under one of three areas of service: Education, Benefit to Lawrence County or Benefit to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The Construction Division of the Housing Department along with the Employment & Education Department has developed and begun implementing the "Youth Works Program." The program involves 4 students that will be working along side John Bosela, ACCESS Lawrence County Program Carpenter. They will be learning vocational skills such as the construction of permanent and temporary ramps, and containment fences. Youth Works began May 3, 2006 and will continue through November 1, 2006. Each student is receiving a stipend for participation. The students will also have the opportunity to conduct career exploration and have one-on-one time with staff for individualized issues.
